Voice Over Experience at Crash Symphony Productions

Voice over work can be tough work but we like to make it easy at Crash Symphony Productions, a Sydney Recording Studio. From the moment the client calls to when the artist arrives, and when the final files are delivered, we pride ourselves on making the voice over experience as seamless as possible. In this article, we’re going to outline some of the things that we do to make sure a voice-over recording session happens with ease and finesse for everyone involved. Read on to learn our approach to a voice over experience.

The Details of a Smooth Session

Voice over client calls and we initially make sure we know exactly what it is that they’re trying to achieve. This is critical to everything that follows. Is it ADR for film, is it a podcast recording, an audiobook, or a TV commercial, or an app. All these types of productions require different time, energy, and preliminary planning for a good voice over experience. Different types of voice over work require different microphones, iPad resources, and technical specifications. Once we know this information we can make sure that the session is setup and ready to go as soon as the voice-over talent walks into the studio. The voice-over talent and client should never have to wait for the engineer to setup the session. This must be done before the session and that involves prior planning.

The Hospitality of a Good VO Session

When the voice-over talent arrives (and client) we ensure that they’re comfortable. “Would you like tea, coffee, or water?”. These are the critical questions of the voice over experience that we want to be focusing on when the client arrives. Once they’re ready to go we usually ask the voice over talent if they’d like to sit or stand during their voice-over work. Most usually like to stand when they’re delivering short, but important, lines of copy.

Isolation Booth Temperature

If it’s a podcast or an audiobook we find that they usually prefer to sit down. This means we need to be thinking about when the talent would like a seat with a back on it or a stool. Temperature. We always make sure that the temperature is comfortable in the isolation booth and that they feel like they can breathe properly. If the voice-over artist is not comfortable on a fluid and a temperature level then they’re not going to deliver the best voice over experience that they have within them.

Payment for the Voice over Session

Voice over rates are very clear cut and transparent. We always make sure that these rates are communicated before the session. Some clients want to receive their files immediately after the recording. We require that full payment has been received by the end of the session. Communicating is key here. Managing the expectations and boundaries of the client-studio relationship is critical. We wish for them to have had a positive voice over experience so that they’ll return in the future.

Linking up with the Internet

Voice over sessions are increasingly needing internet linkups to zoom, source connect and other communications solutions. In our Recording studio, we like to make sure the connection is stable and working. This is done before the session even begins. Making sure technology doesn’t get in the way of our goals. The voice over experience is important in making the operation run smoothly.
