How to Become a Voice-over Artist
Becoming a Voice over artist is fun. However, there are many things you need to consider before you can perform a Voice-over properly. If the Voice-over is not done properly, it could spoil the entire video. In other words, the success of a video depends on the quality of the Voice-over. If you want to become a good Voice-over artist, you should practice. There are a few tips you can follow to make sure your practice sessions improve your skills. Let’s look at a few tips that will guide you to become a Voice-over artist:
Find the Voice You Are Comfortable With
Each individual has a separate voice. Some Voice-over artists have a heavy voice, while others artists have a voice that is soft. One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to imitate a voice or tone they are not comfortable with. If you do this, there is a greater chance you will have problems while recording. Moreover, there is a chance you will end up with a sore throat while recording. Imitating a voice or voice tone you are not comfortable with will place extra strain on your throat. This is why you should practice and find the tone and voice you are comfortable with.
Pump Up Your Vocal Emotions
When you are conversing with someone face to face, the inflictions in your voice are not intense. But your facial expressions relay your emotions to the other person. But when you are performing a Voice-over, you can only relay your emotions to the character using your voice. This is why you have to make sure the emotions in your voice are amplified. You may feel odd while practicing and it may even come across as over the top. But when you listen to your recorded voice, the emotions and inflictions in your voice will be perfect.
Practice before Each Recording
This one is a no-brainer and most people do this. However, novice Voice-over artists often fail to realize the importance of practicing the text prior to recording. This is because they are provided a sheet they can read their lines off. Do keep in mind that recording a Voice-over has to be the same as conversing with someone in real life. If you read the text for the first time while recording, you will not be able to relay the right emotions through your voice. To deliver the proper inflictions and emotions into your recordings, you should read the text a couple of times before you start recording.
Short Breaths Are Key
Back in the day, Voice-over artists were not supposed to breathe while recording. This is why they used to take short breaths and practice breathing without making a sound. However, times have changed and breathing is somewhat acceptable now. But you still need to avoid long gasps for air in between recordings. So, take short controlled breaths and make sure you don’t get breathless.
If you want to become a successful Voice-over artist, you should follow the abovementioned tips.
